It's cool, the only thing that stands out as misleading is the 0-255 for the map
range. 0-255 will be the number of steps, as far as the renderer is concerned
it's 0-1, feed it an 8 bit image and you have 256 steps, 16 bit will be 65536
etc.
You know Silkie you'll want a bit depth tute to go with this.
Interestingly
this video shows up some more things that we tend to forget and take for
granted.

Cool work Paul - one thing in your last example(stating the obvious here) you
may want to mention that by using an animated displacement map you can re-create
waves on the sea effect( perhaps briefly mention how?-very,very briefly?)
