Here we create the hierarchy for a hover robot. In this tutorial there's two hierarchical set-ups, one for flying and one for swinging. These arrangements work well for animation too.
This is the most remarkable series (charged for, or free) that I've seen anywhere. You have stripped down these concepts so well and created perfectly designed and understandable graphics.
Please don't stop. Congratulations and thank you.

Another of the best. Clearly stated no fuss. Just love it. A very good example of the KISS principle... Keep It Simple Stupid. But I can't call you that. Yours are the best.

How do you make the robot switch in practice though. In a studio you wouldn't just get to the point where you need a new rig, so you duplicated it at frame ___, and re-rig it. That stuff is planned ahead.

Depends how quickly the studio wants the job out, if there's a lot of movement you could do it by eye. It's cleaner to match the objects with the tools of the software, simple match constraints etc. This example is animated, and I duplicated at that frame, like as you describe. In a big production it's more likely proper constraints would be used as there's also the problem of motion blur with this method. You'd be suprised what you can get away with though.

Most of the tutorials I have seen jumped right into rigging, it's great to see how to animate with a hierarchy.

thank you for the great info - I'd add a snapshot of where the pivots are at each step before starting to animate, but its very well done

Extremely well done. You even answered the exact question that came to mind while watching your video, that of transitioning during animation. Thanks!
